From Herniated Disc to Disc Replacement

A Patient's Journey Back to an Active Life

In 2018, I herniated my disc at L5/S1. I spent the better part of four years working with PTs to fix and get relief from sciatica and the terrible feeling of instability in my lower back.

As an avid downhill mountain biker, I assume the punishing nature of the sport and constant crashes probably led to my disc issue.

Jump to 2021 (with little progress) I was referred to a neurosurgeon at my local hospital who (after a few visits and imaging) concluded that I was a candidate for fusion. The wait was 18 months. I investigated other options, which led me to artificial disc replacement. Two countries stood out as leaders in this procedure. I sent my images to and met with six surgeons who do ADR and fusion surgery (three each in the US and Germany). All of them said I was a candidate for ADR. I asked each of them for referral patients with whom I spoke to.

In March 2022, I chose Dr. Desai and had my surgery in late April. I’m three years post surgery and I’m doing well. My recovery hasn’t been easy. I still have some issues that I’m working through. But the sciatica and much of the instability I was feeling is gone. Everyone’s situation is unique, and everyone should do their own research on surgeons and the various disc prosthesis before deciding. My experience with Dr. Desai and his team was very good. They were excellent communicators and quick to respond to all my questions (I had a lot). I found Dr. Desai to be a skilled, confident, and very caring surgeon. The Sana hospital in Cologne (Germany) was organized, modern, safe, and clean with very good nurses and an in-house experienced physio department. I would certainly make the same decision today.
