⸺ Infections ⸺
Infections of the cervical spine, thoracic and lumbar spine
Infections of the spine are rare. Because they weaken the weight-bearing functions, they can lead to destabilization of the spine. A distinction is made between primary infection and secondary infection as a result of a previous infection of the body or spine. The incidence of postoperative wound infection is usually <1%.
Conservative treatment
Infections of the spine can be conservatively treated with antibiotics and painkillers, depending on the extent and extent of the infection of vertebral elements. It is important to first identify the infections by MRI, CT or X-rays.
Surgical treatment
In the case of attacked bone structure, neurological failure or dangerous spread, surgery is required to remove the infected tissue and stabilise the vertebrae. Samples are also taken during the operation, which can then be used with targeted antibiotic therapy. Minimally invasive techniques are often used.
