HWS – Doctors correctly identified the problem

HWS -Doctors correctly identified the problem

The wear and tear of my HWS was so severe that in a few months a spinal paralysis could not be ruled out.

In May 2021, I suddenly experienced paralysis in my right hand. At short notice, I got an appointment with my trust's orthopaedic surgeon. He examined me and then sent me to the neurologist for an MRI scan.

After receiving these results, he explained to me that surgery was advisable and referred me to Dr. Desai. Dr. Desai took a lot of time for me, explained me in detail and the surgery was scheduled at very short notice, as the wear and tear of my HWS was so severe that in a few months I could not be ruled out.

In this multi-hour surgery, the 5th and 6th vertebrae were removed. Cervical vertebrae were removed and replaced with a cage attached to vertebrae 4 and 7. The procedure was uncomplicated and I had almost no pain. For another 6 weeks, I wore a neck brace. My head was completely calm. During this time, I started occupational therapy for the hand and light massage of the neck/shoulder area, which I found very helpful.

After six weeks, I had a check-up appointment. Again, there were no abnormalities. The next check-up appointment was after six months. In addition, I had another appointment with the neurologist and a CT scan was done. Again everything was unnoticeable and there was a slight improvement on the previous diagnosis.

I am glad and very grateful that I have doctors who correctly recognized the problem Mr. Dr. Desai informed me thoroughly and acted immediately the whole procedure went well even though this surgery could not completely restore the failure of my hand, but I do not have paralysis. I can live well with that. I will be happy to have my next appointment with Dr. Desai after 12 months.
