From Chronic Back Pain to Disc Implant – My Personal Journey

In early 2024, I was diagnosed with a herniated disc at the L5/S1 segment, after having suffered from back pain for several years — particularly problems with sitting, bending, and standing. Since previous treatments including pain medication, physiotherapy, and PRT injections had not provided sufficient relief and the pain was in fact getting worse, my orthopedist recommended that I see Dr. Desai.

During the appointment, Dr. Desai informed me that I would be a suitable candidate for an artificial disc replacement. He explained the implantation procedure in detail, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of alternative (conservative) treatments.

After taking some time to think it over and seeking a second opinion, I decided to go ahead with the disc implant. What convinced me most was Dr. Desai's thorough consultation and his extensive experience with this type of procedure. Following a further consultation appointment, the surgery was performed a few weeks later in May. I spent a total of five days in hospital without any complications and was able to get up the day after the operation with the help of a back brace. For the first six weeks, I was advised to continue wearing the brace for stability, and I made a point of staying active while protecting my spine — avoiding heavy lifting, prolonged sitting, and driving.

A follow-up check six weeks after the procedure confirmed that the implant was well positioned, allowing me to gradually phase out the brace.

Currently, approximately 11 weeks post-surgery, I have started muscle-strengthening exercises again and am able to move almost freely, with just a few remaining limitations. Although I am still carefully easing back into my "normal daily routine," I can already feel a significant improvement and am glad I made this decision. I would like to thank Dr. Desai for the competent care and, at this point in time, would absolutely choose to have the surgery again.
